Specialty coffee is growing up because people are growing up. Many early third-wave adopters are in their 30s and 40s (even 50s), with families, kids, and phantom back pain. Those in this group with kids have probably heard of On timeor at least I’ve seen some of their work. The stop-motion animation studio is responsible for films like , the hugely underrated , , and of course .
And now the worlds of specialty coffee and watching the same movie with your kid for six months in a row are colliding, Stumptown Coffee Roastery freeing limited edition Cold Brew.
For those unfamiliar with the film, it is a story about a juvenile girl who moves into a modern house where she discovers a secret door to a magical other world where not everything is as it seems. The screenplay was written by Neil Gaiman and stars Dakota Fanning as Coraline, remastered 3D version of the film is set to hit theaters next month in honor of its 15th anniversary. And what better way to celebrate than with a icy brew?
Working with Laika, Portland-based Stumptown drew inspiration for her modern RTD from the “fantasy garden” scene, “a fantastical and surreal world beyond her wildest dreams.”
“Our friends at LAIKA are kindred spirits with similar core values as Stumptown Coffee. We believe in being the best at our craft, pushing the boundaries when it comes to what we create, and we both love our home base in Portland, Oregon.” said Hanna Boone, Creative Director of Stumptown Coffee“The opportunity to work together to celebrate our ongoing success has been a innovative dream and we’re thrilled to see it become a reality in our cafes and cans across the country.”
In addition to the limited-edition cans, which will be available at grocery stores nationwide while supplies last, Portland, Recent York and Pasadena residents can dive even deeper into the caffeine world as select Stumptown cafes will host art galleries showcasing art concepts and memorabilia from the film. There will also be an inspired menu with items like the Coconut Cream Cool Brew, made with coconut cream, icy brew and a topping of toasted coconut flakes. And if that’s not enough, Laika and Stumptown are collaborating on a line of coffee merchandise and merch, including mugs, tote bags and stickers, which will be available at participating Stumptown cafes and online.
Honestly, the collaboration makes perfect sense. Coraline would be 26 now, and there’s absolutely no way she hasn’t spent most of those years in a moody coffee shop, most likely as a barista. She’s the poster child for the icy brew generation, quite literally now. For more information, visit the official websites Stumptown Coffee Roastery AND On time.
And if someone from Stumptown could ask the people from Laika why their characters have to lose an eye all the time. It scares my kids.
