Ordering a coffee at your favorite coffee shop can be fun, but it’s not the most budget-friendly option.

Making coffee at home is a cheaper alternative, so Insider spoke to coffee experts about the best tricks for making coffee at home.

Start by cleaning your coffee machine regularly

One way to improve the quality of your coffee is to regularly spotless your coffee machine, says Josh Zad, founder and imaginative director of the popular coffee chain Alfred, he told Insider.

“Make sure you get into the nooks and crannies of every part, especially where the coffee comes through the filter,” he said. “The flavor and aroma of aged coffee really masks the flavor of freshly brewed coffee.”

The best way to spotless hard-to-reach stains is to throw in a little baking soda, a little vinegar, and a little water. Then leave it overnight, and it’ll come off easily the next day, according to Zad.

Consider trying a modern brewing method, such as a coffee maker or a moka pot.

If you want to delve into the world of artisan coffee, there are many ways to make it at home, says Selina Viguera, coffee shop leader Blue Bottle Coffee’s Abbot Kinney location, Insider reported.

The coffee maker, French press, AeroPress, Chemex and various types of coffee machines are just the beginning.

If you don’t know where to start, Viguera said there are plenty of resources online, and most coffee roasting companies have guides on their websites.

If you’re looking for specific recommendations for brewing coffee, many experts agree that their favorite method is pour-over, which involves slowly pouring sizzling water over ground coffee.

According to Viguera, with the right technique, you can make truly delicious coffee.

He adds that once you understand some of the variables involved in brewing coffee (grind size, water temperature, how you stir), you’ll be able to make different cups from the same bag of coffee.

Start buying coffee beans instead of ground coffee

“To make better coffee, buy better coffee,” Viguera told Insider.

“It’s a good idea to buy a grinder that will grind your coffee in the amount and coarseness you want,” Azoury told Insider. “A good grinder will give you both grind options and amounts that suit your taste.”

Make sure your grinder is the right size

According to Viguera, ground coffee that is too fine will result in over-extraction, while ground coffee that is too rough will result in under-extraction.

Over-brewed coffee can taste parched and bitter, while under-brewed coffee can taste watery and sour.

To avoid this, Viguera told Insider it’s significant to “fine-tune” your coffee. Baristas operate the term to describe the act of adjusting the grind settings to find the right coarseness/fineness to brew a balanced cup.

Coffee has a sweet spot — the ideal grind setting — that balances bitterness, acidity and sweetness. That sweet spot can vary depending on the coffee’s origin, roast and age, according to Viguera.

Grind only the beans you plan to brew at once

You should only grind the amount of coffee you intend to brew.

“If you grind all of your coffee but don’t brew it all at once, you’re going to significantly speed up the rate at which the rest of the coffee loses its delicious complexity,” Zad told Insider.

The taste of coffee may vary depending on the water quality.

According to Viguera, another significant factor to consider when brewing coffee at home is water, which makes up about 98% of a brewed cup of coffee.

“As the primary solvent for extracting flavor and aroma from ground coffee, your water needs a certain level of hardness/mineralization and alkalinity to achieve a high-quality extraction,” she told Insider. “Depending on where you live, your tap water may be too rigid/cushioned to bring out the best in your cup.”

Delicate and gloomy roasts require different brewing temperatures

Water temperature is another key factor when brewing coffee.

“To brew a properly extracted cup of coffee, you should operate water heated to between 198 and 202 degrees Fahrenheit,” Viguera said. “Lighter roast coffees may require more heat (202 degrees Fahrenheit), while darker roast coffees taste better when brewed with water closer to 198 degrees Fahrenheit.”

Try warming the cup before pouring the coffee.

If you pour sizzling coffee into a chilly cup, the coffee becomes even colder the moment it hits the ceramic.

According to Zad, a warmed mug will allow you to enjoy your sizzling coffee longer in the morning.

Change your life and prepare chilly brew at home

Another way to spice up your coffee drinking habit is to make your own chilly brew at home.

To make it, simply grind the beans coarsely and add water, Zad said. Then, refrigerate them overnight to extract all the prosperous sweetness from the coffee.

Add spices to create your own coffee flavor

According to Zad, flavored coffee can be full of artificial ingredients that don’t complement the natural flavor of the beans.

Instead, he suggested adding ingredients to your coffee that actually produce the flavors you like.

“Try adding spices to your coffee grounds when you’re chilly brewing,” Zad told Insider. “Throw in cinnamon sticks, crushed roasted hazelnuts, cardamom pods, star anise, cocoa shells, or even hot ingredients like cumin to steep overnight in your chilly brew, and in the morning you’ll have all-natural, hot goodness—nothing artificial.”

Apply a scale to get the right ratio of coffee to water

Knowing your brewing ratio – or the ratio of coffee to water – and using a scale will support you brew good quality coffee.

“For reference, the industry standard is 1:18 (one part coffee to 18 parts water), which typically results in a cup with a lighter texture but more transparency of flavor,” Viguera told Insider. “If you prefer a bolder, fuller cup, try 1:14.”
