In Hanoi, roastery cafes offer a glimpse into Vietnam’s changing coffee culture

The city of Hanoi in Vietnam is completely and utterly obsessed with coffee. This is nothing recent; The intertwined history of coffee and Hanoi dates back to the mid-19th century, the French colonial period, when the first Arabica trees were planted in the north of the country and French café culture was introduced to the cities. In the decades since a distinctly Vietnamese appreciation of coffee has blossomed, influencing every aspect of coffee consumption here, from cultivation to brewing to the distinctive recipes and flavors of the finished cup. And Hanoi’s coffee romance shows no signs of ending. Walk around the city now, ride a motorcycle or hop on a bus, and you will see adolescent people pouring out of the many cafes and bars, enjoying the slowness, depth and relaxation of coffee culture in a city that is bustling with activity 24/7.

In 2025, Sprudge published a comprehensive guide to Hanoi’s coffee shops, a must-have for anyone visiting the city and wanting to experience coffee culture. But today I want to take a closer look at the role of quality-first coffee roasters and the impact they’ve had on the city’s scene. Hanoi is a place where traditions meet transformation, and now you can experience it in the excellent coffee roastery scene, on the main streets and in the peaceful alleys. The owners of these roasteries are mainly adolescent people who feel inspired and passionate about the customary coffee culture in Hanoi, and at the same time want to develop and modernize it. Along the way, these roasteries are bringing Vietnamese coffee to the world and becoming more and more renowned to coffee lovers around the world.

Each of the unique coffee roasteries featured in this guide is worth your time in Hanoi. Even if you are a coffee connoisseur, a coffee expert or just someone curious about Hanoi coffee, everyone will find something for themselves here.

Donkey Coffee Roastery

Donkey Coffee Roastery is owned by a former graphic designer who now runs a miniature roastery and café dedicated to providing high-quality craft coffee. Situated in a miniature street on the banks of the Red River, it has a pretty and peaceful space with a shaded outdoor garden. The industrial style of the cafe combines with vintage, including DIY decoration details, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere. It is the perfect place to escape from the raucous city and relax with a cup of coffee.

Donkey is renowned for roasting many types of specialty coffee, coming from Vietnamese coffee growers as well as producers from around the world. Here you can find naturally processed goose grown in nearby Laos, prepared by hand using the pouring method. The café’s orange chilly brew is particularly popular during the summer months, and regular public cuppings lend a hand spread coffee awareness to the wider community.

Hanoi’s West Lake is renowned for exploring Hanoi and there are many romantic cafes nearby. This is home Capella coffee roasterywhose café space resembles an art gallery, with paintings hanging on the walls and cozy wooden furniture. Huge glazing overlooks the green gardens, and the space bathed in natural lightweight provides a feeling of relaxation, regardless of whether you come here to work, read a book or spend time with friends.

Capella is well appreciated here for the quality of its roasted coffee. Start by ordering the Capella Phin Blend – a medium-dark roast blend of Arabica and Robusta – which delivers a luxurious flavor that pays homage to the coffee traditions of Vietnam, but with a contemporary twist. The salted coffee (salted coffee) is also very good here and goes great with one of Capella’s homemade cakes (my favorite is the lemon cheesecake).
