Titan ET58 by Cera+: automatic, consistent tamping in the palm of your hand

Are the days of sabotage numbered? Not exactly sabotages, but the ones fueled by the barista, the ones that lead to repeated injuries. Over the past half-decade or so, automated tamping systems like the PuqPress have become increasingly popular in commercial applications, providing consistent, even tamping without the employ of wrist torque. Even more recently, spring-loaded tampers have become popular, offering similar results at a fraction of the price for both café and home users, even if they require a bit of elbow grease to engage the mechanism.

But there’s a recent device on the market that threads the needle between them. The Titan ET58 electronic coffee tamper is a manual, automatic tamping system that attempts to provide constant pressure in commercial systems at a fraction of the cost, and it does live on Kickstarter Now.

Created by Complexion+“an engineering-driven coffee equipment brand focused on perfecting the way you make espresso,” as the campaign says Titan ET58, as its name suggests, is built to work with industry-standard 58mm portafilter baskets and touts itself as a fully customizable, versatile disc-making tool (no WDT). Among the many features are a undulating base and a built-in vibration function that “eliminates voids at the bottom of the coffee bed to… [reduce] risk of channeling effect.”

This compact device allows users to control total pressure – from 5-20 kg (11-44 lbs) – contact time with the espresso bed, number of tamps per cycle, bed leveling time and vibration strength. Once you’ve set your parameters, simply install the portafilter onto the portafilter (like locking the portafilter on a coffee machine, but in reverse), press the button and let the Titan ET58 do the rest.

The Titan ET58 is rechargeable via USB-C and is said to provide over 2,000 beat cycles per full charge. 2025 World Barista Champion Jack Simpson is a fan.

With less than two weeks left in the campaign, the Titan ET58 is already priced at nearly 15 times its $3,800 goal, but there are still rewards available for recent backers. Interested parties can reserve their own Titan for $129, which is a 35% discount off the MSRP of $199. The units are expected to begin shipping in mid-May this year.

So if you’re tired of lumpy, uneven espresso beds or you’re just a fan of coffee gadgets, the Titan ET58 from Cera+ may be your recent favorite tamper. For more information or to support the campaign, visit the Titan ET58 website Kickstarter page.
