Free coffee, Albertsons adds swift delivery, Amazon just quits – San Diego Union-Tribune

Caffeine lovers, mark this on your calendars

What goes better with a donut than coffee? How about free coffee.

National Coffee Day falls on September 29.

One way is to visit your preferred or most conveniently located chain. Peet’s Coffee gives away free diminutive drip coffees with purchase. Dunkin’ gives away free medium hot or iced coffee with every purchase. (Order must be placed via the app.)

However, if you want to support a local business (and pair your coffee with a handmade donut), head to Dodo Bird DonutsCustomers will be able to receive a free cup of drip coffee throughout the day on September 29.

The bakery sources its beans from Gloomy Horse. As for those made-from-scratch, small-batch donuts: the menu features a mix of classic flavors and a few twists. The tiramisu, for example, is filled with real fluffy tiramisu and topped with an espresso and cocoa glaze.

Another ad from a diminutive San Diego company: Bird Rock Coffee Roasterywhich has 10 coffee shops across the county, will be handing out free 12-ounce cups of coffee from 7 to 11 a.m.

Albertsons Adds 30-Minute Pickup and Delivery

Whether you’re looking to pick up groceries for dinner tonight or you’re in urgent need of kale, Albertsons hopes to become your go-to place for quick shopping.

The grocer has added a fresh service called Flash Pickup and Delivery to its nearly 50 stores in San Diego County. The promise: They’ll deliver your groceries or bring them to your car in 30 to 50 minutes.

While many stores offer pickup and delivery of orders, order processing times are shorter than usual.

Flash is available only during regular business hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours vary by store. Given the quick turnaround, there is a limit of 35 items. And orders under $30 may incur a fee, the website says.

We’re offering 20% off your first online delivery order over $75, excluding alcohol, gift cards, stamps, taxes, and a few other items (coupon code: SAVE20).

University of California, San Diego, is the first location in San Diego to launch Amazon’s Just Walk Out service

If you or someone you love has been negatively impacted by bulky foot traffic and long checkout lines at UC San Diego campus markets, know that relief is on the way.

Three stores — Roger’s Market, Sixth Market and Seventh Market — make it much easier to pay with Amazon Just Walk Out Technologythe university said this week.

UC San Diego is the first place in San Diego to apply the technology, the university said in a news release.

“This cutting-edge technology eliminates wait times, increases speed and convenience, and aligns with our mission to continually improve the student experience,” Pierre Ouillet, vice chancellor and chief financial officer at UC San Diego, said in a statement.

Here’s how it works: You enter the store using Triton2Go App at the entry gate. Up-to-date technology tracks what you take or put back on the shelves. When you’re done, you’re out. No lines. No cashiers. No fumbling with your phone or credit card.

In a press release, the university noted that “employees are no longer needed at checkout.” Instead, it said, they will be released to assist customers and restock shelves. (The press release did not provide any information on staffing levels.)

In the UC San Diego community on Reddit, most people were excited about the change:

“this would be… a huge event for the sixth market during rush hour, I have skipped the market many times before classes because the queue would be too long,” someone commented.

Another asked if people can still apply EBT — electronic benefits.

Another Reddit user wrote that he tested the technology and was impressed: “I have a ton of these stores in Orange County, it’s really amazing technology and it’s exact, I opened… once in a store, made a purchase, walked out and paid anyway.”

However, one user was apparently not cheerful with the change. He claimed that it would make it harder to steal protein bars and gum. He also added a few crying emojis.
