Give me this fresh blue Klein ceramic mug for Christmas

Here at Sprudge, we always have an eye out for fascinating bits of ephemera in the world of ceramics. Whether it’s the heyday of third wave with the work of Ben Medansky at Go Get Em Tiger, or drinkware so cute it hurts from Hana Ward of Uno+Ichi in Los Angeles (whose last drop stretches the limits of practicality in the name of endless sweetness), a handcrafted pouring set from Veak Ceramics or a set of novelty vintage beef mugs, we’re always on the lookout for quirky and well-appointed ones. And the latest pottery we found is maybe both?

Introducing A set of Klein ceramic coffee cups in blue by Toronto-based J&M Union, which combines elegance and texture with an ergonomic puzzle, and is now available on Kickstarter.

The most striking feature of the mug is its color (no mean feat considering the position of the handle). Known as Klein Blue, a color attributed to artist Yves Klein, “a shade of pure ultramarine that Klein allegedly invented and trademarked” – this is the theme of one of his works from 1961. The matte finish adds texture that you can almost feel in the photos. An accompanying saucer in the same color and finish and a mid-century gold spoon complete the set, which is “inspired by Japanese minimalism and European elegance, this set combines up-to-date aesthetics with functional craftsmanship.”

Now onto the handle. What to say about the handle. Well, first of all, it looks like an oversized game piece from the Sorry board game stuck in the cup, and when the cup is placed on the base of the holder, it takes on the appearance of a spotlight pointing down towards the table. I have to admit, I think it looks pretty chilly, if not a little iffy. But the real question is: how does it hold and does it fit in your hand? Do you hold it between your index and middle fingers like a popsocket when you’re trying to take a selfie with your massive phone? Do you grip it as if you were turning a knob to pour a sizzling drink into your mouth? Do you grab it by the scales (which I imagine a simple matter of weight ratio)? But the elusiveness of its operate only adds to the appeal and intentional nature with which it could be handled.

With over eight weeks left in the campaign, the Klein Blue ceramic coffee cup set has raised $132 of its $706 goal. Would-be supporters can get their own kit for as little as $35. There’s even a red variant available (why, since blue is right next to it). If the campaign is successful, prizes will begin shipping in March.
