In 2011, Dave Asprey, founder of the Bulletproof Diet, gave this buttered coffee recipe its name. The Bulletproof website describes the drink as a “blend of coffee, MCT oil, and grass-fed butter.” It’s elementary, but that’s all. The drink prioritizes fat and protein over sugar to provide an energy-dense drink that most people exploit to start their day. I’ve talked to a lot of dietitians who recommend it to clients, especially those following a ketogenic diet. People typically drink Bulletproof Coffee in the morning for breakfast. Brenda Peraltadietitian and medical expert, recommends bulletproof coffee as “a great way to raise energy levels in the morning.”

Given that it’s coffee, I wanted to talk to the experts. Lukas Van Vyve, Founder Emerging drinkis a coffee expert. He has a recipe for Bulletproof coffee, so he was ready to get into the details.
It starts with brewing fresh coffee using your preferred method. Make sure the proportions of grounds and water are well balanced to create a bold flavor. In other words, make the kind of coffee that gets you out of bed in the morning. This can be anything from French press coffee for one of yours Coffee machineMy best advice is to make sure the coffee is of good quality and that you exploit ground coffeer for the freshest results. You’ll experience more flavors and have more caffeine, which is always welcome in the morning.
Then you add butter and MCT oil – like this MCT Oil at Amazon – in sultry coffee. Hot coffee will melt the butter and oils, making the coffee much more palatable. Lukas recommends using one tablespoon of butter per eight ounces of coffee, followed by one tablespoon of MCT oil or powder. These are high-energy ingredients that will give your coffee a creamy texture and also make you feel full. Lukas says, “The powder can make all the difference if you suffer from digestive issues. Simply swapping the oil for the powder doesn’t affect the taste at all.”
Once the ingredients are combined, pour them into a blender or whisk them by hand. Most people recommend a blender. The oils separate easily, so whisking by hand will exploit more energy than the coffee will give you.

Casey Allen, CEO of Barista Warrior, is a regular Bulletproof coffee drinker who suggests swapping MCT oil for organic coconut milk and cream. These products naturally contain MCT oil. For Casey, “pure MCT oil made me feel too antsy.” He also recommends using grass-fed salted butter instead of unsalted butter. “The salt actually tones down the bitterness of the coffee and balances out the subtle sweetness of the coconut milk.” I’m a substantial fan of salt in coffee, but just a little bit. It makes all the difference.
If you don’t like butter, Brenda Peraltamedical expert and registered dietitian, recommends Ghee in butter. She says this clarified butter has a “creamier consistency and makes drinks more intense.” You can find it in the Asian sections of Walmart or Trader Joes, or at your local Asian supermarket. It provides the same benefits, but be sure to melt the ghee.
