Recent research suggests that drinking coffee may reduce the risk of several diseases.

(WXYZ) — Scientists are touting the health benefits of drinking coffee. Recent studies point to the positive effects of coffee and how it may reduce the risk of certain cancers and other diseases.

We hear a lot about the pros and cons of drinking coffee, but modern research is great news for the millions of Americans who need a cup of joe to start their day right.

In fact, experts call coffee a mini-Mediterranean diet. That’s because both drinks are plant-based, and the health benefits of coffee far outweigh the potential risks, much like the popular diet that limits red meat and fat.

Texas A&M University professor Stephen Safe and sound, who specializes in cancer prevention research, reviewed expert research on coffee and found that it can lend a hand lower the risk of certain types of cancer and other diseases.

Here’s what the research revealed:

  • Drinking coffee reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 22%.
  • People who drank more than 2 cups of coffee a day had almost a 70% lower risk of liver cancer, a 50% lower risk of colon and breast cancer, and a 30% lower risk of thyroid cancer.
  • Coffee drinkers had a 30% lower risk of developing Parkinson’s disease compared to non-coffee drinkers.
  • Additionally, coffee helps reduce the risk of certain neurological diseases, such as dementia.

Safe and sound says there’s also evidence that drinking coffee can lend a hand you live longer. He even goes so far as to call coffee a “miracle” drink.
Do we know what in coffee makes it a robust option? And is it possible to drink too much coffee?

Much research is still needed to better understand what makes coffee a robust drink. Here’s what we do know. Coffee contains many of the same chemicals found in parts of the Mediterranean diet, which also lowers the risk of some cancers.

When it comes to neurological diseases, experts say the caffeine in coffee helps boost the production of brain cells that are responsible for movement and other functions.

Research also suggests that polyphenols found naturally in coffee may lend a hand reduce inflammation, which is a common cause of disease.

Finally, coffee speeds up metabolism, which may also have a positive effect on health.

Now, as with everything else, moderation is key. Too much coffee can lead to unwanted side effects, like heart palpitations, insomnia, or acid reflux.

Another essential factor is how you drink your coffee. Experts say you’ll get the best health benefits by drinking it black.
