Mushroom coffee is a combination of ground mushrooms and coffee grounds, and its origins date back much earlier than you might think. The Finnish company Four Sigmatic notes that mushroom coffee was used during World War II, when chaga mushrooms were used as a coffee substitute. Chaga Mushrooms grow in parts of Asia, Europe and North America.
According to a study published in 2021 in AntioxidantsThis species of mushroom is used to support immunity, treat diabetes, and reduce tumors. It is a source of vitamins, minerals, protein, and antioxidants with anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antithrombotic properties.
Mushroom coffee is becoming more and more popular because mushrooms including cordyceps, lion’s mane, chaga, and shiitake, contain biologically lively compounds that may reduce inflammation and stress and improve sleep and cognitive function. Since coffee is such a widely consumed beverage, it’s a great idea for companies to include mushrooms in their mix. Additionally, some mushroom coffees are lower in caffeine, which could make them more appealing to consumers trying to cut back on caffeine.
The lively ingredients of mushroom coffee are not regulated by FDAbecause they are not used in their entirety and are therefore considered dietary supplements. According to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDC Act), “functional mushrooms sold in powder or tablet form are more likely to be considered dietary supplements and are subject to a different set of regulations.”
Keep in mind that mushroom coffee is more exorbitant than regular coffee, and brands vary in the blends and types of mushroom powders they employ. People with mushroom or nut allergies should avoid mushroom coffee, as some brands employ coconut products in their blends. Additionally, pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before using mushroom coffee, as there is a lack of research in this population.
There is currently not much human research on the benefits of mushroom coffee, but there is research on individual ingredients. a study published in 2021 in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research Consuming mushrooms, coffee, cocoa, red wine and other foods prosperous in polyphenols that support robust gut microflora has been found to have a protective effect against cognitive decline in older people.
In addition, mushrooms are known for their robust nutrient profile, including fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Mushrooms also contain bioactive compounds (phenols, flavonoids, and carotenoids) that provide health benefits in terms of antioxidants, antimicrobials, antifungals, anticancer agents, and prebiotics, according to review published in the 2022 issue.
