Clogs can occur due to mineral build-up, ancient or clogged coffee filters, or even mold growing inside the machine. In this article, you’ll learn how to diagnose and fix clogs in your coffee maker, ensuring your beverages are always fresh and delicious.

Diagnosing the Clog

  1. Last Brewed Coffee: Check the last brewed coffee to ensure it’s not just a water restriction issue. If the coffee is faint and obscure, it could be a sign of corrosion or mineral buildup.
  2. Coffee Puck or Grounds Dispenser: Inspect the coffee puck or grounds dispenser for dried coffee grounds, ancient grime, or mineral deposits. Pristine or clear any blockages to restore good flow.
  3. Water Flow: Dispense water from the coffee machine in a cup or sink to spot any blockages. If the water can’t flow freely, it may indicate a hardened mineral deposit or scale buildup.
  4. Descaler Solution: Apply an descaling solution to the coffee brew flow path to dissolve mineral deposits caused by strenuous water. Check brand guidelines for recommended usage and dosage).

Fixing the Clog – Methods and Tips

Method 1 – Vinegar and Water

Combine water and white vinegar in separate containers. Pour equal ratios of water and vinegar into the water tank. Run a brewing cycle. When complete, repeat the process a maximum of 2-3 times to strip away mineral deposits and scale buildup. If the clog persists, switch gears to Method 2.

Method 2 – Baking Soda and Vinegar

Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda per 1 cup of water in the water reservoir.
