SAN DIEGO — From the first coffeehouses in the Ottoman Empire to the London Coffee House in Boston, coffeehouses have always been places to meet, sip coffee and share ideas. Many of them have changed the world.
During the Enlightenment, coffeehouses regularly hosted figures such as Voltaire, Rousseau, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Isaac Newton. Later, Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre spent hours in coffeehouses, contemplating their works and holding court alongside other intellectuals.
There are many other coffee shops with wealthy histories in the United States, including Fresh York’s Caffe Reggio. Founded in 1927, it was the first coffee shop in the country to serve cappuccino and was also one of the first to employ the La Pavoni espresso machine. Fresh Orleans’ Cafe du Monde, founded in 1862, is a fixture in the French Quarter for its coffee and beignets.
