The Basics of the VSSL Nest Pour Over Coffee Brewing System

At first glance, the Nest looks like a vast thermos. It’s 11.5 inches towering and 3.4 inches in diameter. Like all VSSL tubes, however, it’s much larger than it looks.

Unscrewing the top reveals a secret: this mug doubles as a 10-ounce stainless steel mug. Unscrewing the base reveals another. These are double-walled, vacuum-insulated mugs that support keep your coffee scorching while protecting your hands from the heat.

Go back up to unscrew the next part and you’ll find a screw-on lid for one of the cups.

The next section that comes up is a conical shape on the inside with a groove cut into the bottom. This is your pouring section. The threads allow you to screw it directly onto the top of your cup, ensuring you don’t lose any of your precious, life-sustaining liquid when you’re brewing in the field.

The rest of the box contains a reusable mesh filter and an instruction manual. Right out of the box, it does exactly what it was designed to do—store. It’s a place to store your beans or grounds, and it even has room for VSSL’s G25 manual grinder.

It is not so obvious that VSSL uses 80% recycled 18/8 304 stainless steel for metal components. Plastic components are BPA free.

All that remains is to grind the coffee beans and heat the water.

When it comes to grinding beans, VSSL has you covered, too. A more compact companion to the VSSL Nest is the G25 grinder. Made from aircraft-grade aluminum, it measures 6.2 inches towering, 2 inches across, and weighs 12.7 inches. It actually fits into either VSSL’s Nest or AeroPress Go.

Twisting the top activates the stainless steel burrs, which is a glossy action. One side of the handle unscrews and slides out for simple grinding. Before you start, unscrew the bottom cap and remove the black cone that’s there. It goes through the top of the handle, providing an even better grip.

As the coffee grounds are ground, they fall into the base where they can be easily added to the VSSL Nest brewer.

Removing the black cone earlier also showed you the grind settings. There are 50 different settings to choose from by simply turning the cap, so you can dial in the exact grind you want for the beans you’re carrying.

Up to 30 grams of beans can be ground, and the average grinding time is about 60 seconds.

The G25’s capacity is great for a single cup, but if you plan on brewing more often, the G45 might be more your speed. It has the same great features, but can hold up to 50 grams of beans, has a slightly larger size of 7.2 inches x 2.4 inches, and weighs 21 ounces.

Nest comes in a few different forms. The full Nest Kit we tested costs $75. There’s also a Nest Set designed for single-person operate.

A replacement cup with a screw-on lid costs $25, and replacement mesh filters are $10 each.

If you need a grinder, the G25 is $160 and the G45 is $220.
