Maca coffee is a herbal drink made from the adaptogenic herb Lepidium meyenii, commonly known as maca. “Adaptogens are a category of herbs that enhance the state of non-specific stress resistance and reduce sensitivity to certain stressors – essentially strengthening our stress response system. Only a dozen or so herbs are considered true adaptogens,” says Rachelle Robinett, clinical herbalist and founder of Fresh York-based Pharmakon Supernatural, a functional nature company that offers herbal education, herbal products and wellness consultations.
This decaffeinated drink is prepared by mixing maca root powder or maca powder supplement with warm water. You can also utilize other optional ingredients such as milk, sweeteners, or other herbs to create a tasty, energy-boosting alternative to coffee. Research shows that bioactive compounds found in maca, called macamides, may be responsible for its potential anti-fatigue effects. Macamides are long-chain fatty acids known to accelerate energy metabolism.
Robinett says maca, the main ingredient in maca coffee, is a root vegetable native to the Andes mountain region in South America. “Maca has long been used as a functional food and complementary ingredient, and recent research shows that this herb may be beneficial to reproductive health,” he adds. However, additional research is needed on the potential health benefits of this herb.
Maca is a versatile, nourishing, and nourishing herb, says Kelsey Stang ND, a naturopathic doctor in Portland, Oregon, who focuses on reproductive health and gastrointestinal issues. “It benefits energy and hormonal balance. I love the ease of tweaking common foods and drinks, like a warm morning drink (coffee), to support the body more consciously.” According to Dr. Stang, flour can also be added to coffee if reducing caffeine intake is not a priority for the individual.
