Before you start brewing, you need to decide which type of machine best suits your needs. Some models, such as those in the popular VertuoLine, make both coffee and espresso. Some have built-in milk frothers to create the perfect latte or cappuccino. Others create more crema for a well-balanced espresso. While almost all Nespresso models are effortless to employ and less exorbitant than other coffee machines, it’s crucial to consider the features that suit your needs before you make the investment. Here’s what to keep in mind:
✔️ Original vs VertuoLine:To understand the differences between all the Nespresso models, you must first understand the differences in how the VertuoLine and original series machines work.
- Original machinesincluding the Creatista, Essenza, CitiZ and Lattissima series, produce espresso by forcing water through the top of the capsule using 19 bars of pressure (similar to a established espresso machine), eventually breaking the foil at the bottom of the capsule and allowing the espresso to flow out. Because the original machines work more like true espresso machines, they can only make espresso, not coffee, and you should expect a more established level of crema. The original machines are also noisier than the VertuoLine machines because of this process.
- VertuoLine machineryFirst introduced in 2014 to appeal to the North American market, they employ a different technology that Nespresso likes to call “centrifusion”: water enters through the top of a domed capsule, mixes with the espresso through centrifugal force, and then flows out through 20 holes in the side of the capsule. This centrifugal process allows VertuoLine machines to produce espresso with a chunky layer of crema, and can also make regular coffee.
✔️ Original Capsules vs. Vertuo Capsules: It is crucial to take this into account because you cannot swap pods between machine types. However, all pod types can be recycled via Nespresso Capsule Recycling ProgramHere’s the difference:
- Original pods they only come in one size. They are generally easier to find, cheaper, and available in more varieties, although that could change. If you are a fan of espresso only and prefer a established level of crema, the original line will likely meet your needs.
- Vertuo Pods have custom barcodes that the machines read to automatically produce the right drink every time, making them very effortless to employ. Vertuo capsules also come in a variety of sizes, so your larger drinks won’t be diluted. If you want to make a wide range of coffee drinks and want a machine that’s very effortless to employ (and can make coffee!), the VertuoLine is the way to go.
✔️ Milk frothers: Some Nespresso models, including the Creatista and Gran Lattissima series, feature integrated steam nozzles for frothing milk. These are very convenient for those who want to prepare macchiato, latte, cappuccino and other drinks with milk. However, these milk frothers can sometimes be hard to neat and maintain. Nespresso also sells Aeroccinoa separate milk frother, which is often included with their machines. If you want a coffee shop-style experience, you should consider choosing a model with an integrated frother. The Aeroccino doesn’t produce “true” microfoam, but it performed well in our milk frother tests and makes milk for coffee and espresso quickly and easily.
✔️ Size: If you’re looking for a machine as tiny, powerful, and sophisticated as espresso itself, there are a few compact options, including the Essenza Mini and the CitiZ. These machines forgo extra features and enormous water tanks to stay tiny and lightweight. But if you want to make multiple drinks in a row or a larger cup of coffee for yourself, you’ll want to consider larger, taller models. Make sure the machine you choose will fit under your cabinets and fit the type of vessel you’ll be drinking your coffee out of.
✔️ Manufacturer: Don’t be fooled by the “Breville” or “De’Longhi” labels on various Nespresso models: Both companies own the rights to these machines, and neither makes a better one. The differences you’ll notice between manufacturers have more to do with design—many Breville machines, for example, fit the company’s usual stainless steel and brushed stainless steel aesthetic.
