Ryan Coogler is a full-fledged coffee geek

Ryan Coogler is one of the hottest writers and directors working in Hollywood today. After directing the spin-off, Coogler became a household name for the film’s adaptation. His latest film recently received 16 Oscar nominations – including Best Director and Best Picture – the most in Oscar history.

Now it has come to our attention that Coogler, in addition to being an extremely talented silver screen auteur, is also a huge coffee fiend.

The information appeared via the YouTube channel Proximity mediaa multimedia company founded by Coogler, his wife Zinzi and Sev Ohanian. Features interviews with industry insiders, including the writers and directors of the Netflix hit, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. Coogler doesn’t always participate in studio interviews, but when he does, it’s quite likely he’s making people coffee.

Take, for example, his recent discussion with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Discussing her work as writer, director and producer of the upcoming Frankenstein-adjacent film, Coogler spends the first five minutes making a transfer, v60 for Gyllenhaal and co-host Paola Mardo. And its configuration? Pretty good. Colleague Stagg ECG kettle, Acacia Pearl scale, a Encore of Orchard grinder and coffee from Oakland’s Red Bay Coffee. This is solid.

How can you tell that Coogler isn’t pretending to love coffee? It’s in the wrist. He has practiced the movements of pouring water on the bed. (I’m not a fan of two-handed pouring, but you can’t go wrong with this technique.) But the real tell for me is that he says “not bad” after tasting the brew before serving it. Anyone who has ever had to make someone coffee and felt the burden of convincing them of the greatness of specialty coffee with just one cup will recognize this slight hesitation. (And relief when they express joy.)

And coffee doesn’t appear in a one-off movie. In an episode with regular collaborator Michael B. Jordan, Coogler issues a challenge Miniline— and red to match Mazzera Mini grinder – to get a few shots of Red Bay. It turns out that Coogler brings the entire coffee set with him to the set and, in addition to hosting the show, he will also prepare drinks for the cast and crew.

Throughout the videos, Coogler discusses making coffee as both a ritual and an act of service, which ticks many boxes on a coffee person’s checklist.

So if you’re looking for a recent favorite director and are driven by coffee – and aren’t thrilled that Tarantino has become your only option since the death of David Lynch – then Ryan Coogler may be your candidate.
