Before you invest in your novel home barista, here are the most critical features you should consider.
Milk frother
If you like milk-based coffee (e.g. cappuccino, latte or macchiato), it is worth looking for a “bean-to-cup” coffee machine with a milk frother.
There are three types of milk frothers available, with most models for coffee beans featuring an automatic frother.
- Some automatic frother is a sealed jug, usually plastic or glass, in which milk is frothed and heated. Some jugs have an adjustable spout that pours directly into the cup, while others require manual pouring. The jug can be detached from the coffee maker, and some models have cleaning programs to make sure it stays in good working order.
- AND steam wand is the preferred method used in coffee shops. It is a long, lean tube attached to the side of the coffee machine that uses steam pressure to froth the milk. It is controlled by a knob that opens or closes a valve that releases steam.
- The last way to froth milk is to exploit foaming additive. These are standalone milk frothers that are not controlled by the device itself. This means that you will need to froth the milk manually.
Personalization
Most bean-to-cup coffee machines allow you to adjust the size of the drink, the strength of the coffee, and sometimes the strength of the aroma. On some models, you can save these settings so you can repeat your favorite combinations.
If you’re less interested in discovering your inner barista and more interested in quickly enjoying a fresh cup of coffee, look for a machine that has a pre-set drinks menu alongside the manual controls. Offering drinks like cappuccino or flat white, the settings mean that when you’re in a hurry, the machine does all the work for you.
Clever control
Some coffee machines can be controlled via an app on your phone. However, you need to make sure you are prepared by having enough beans in the container, water in the tank and a cup ready under the tap. If everything is ready, you’ll be able to make coffee without getting out of bed – the perfect way to wake up!
Automatic cleaning
Some models also run an automatic rinse program when the coffee maker is turned on, rinsing the system to ensure you are brewing your coffee with fresh water.
