✔️ Disposable Coffee Capsules vs. Reusable Filters:Most single-serve coffee machines apply store-bought coffee capsules, such as the popular Keurig K-Cup Capsules. Pods are petite plastic or aluminum cups that contain pre-measured amounts of ground coffee and a built-in filter. K-Cup pods and capsules are convenient but more costly than using your own ground coffee. And while some pods are recyclable, like K-Cup pods, you’ll first need to remove the grounds and foil and check with your local recycling facility to make sure they can process the type of plastic the pods are made from. Tender pods are a popular alternative: the ground coffee is contained in a round paper filter that resembles a tea bag, eliminating plastic waste.
If you prefer a pod-free coffee maker, there are single-serve coffee makers that have a reusable filter that you can fill with your own ground coffee. Reusable filters are definitely a more environmentally cordial option, but the filters do need to be washed after each apply. All of the reusable filters we tested were uncomplicated to remove from the coffee maker and are dishwasher secure. We recommend adding 2 tablespoons of ground coffee to the reusable filter to make a 6-ounce cup of coffee.
✔️ Water tank: Think about how often you make coffee. If you make two or more cups a day, you’ll want a gigantic water reservoir, which means fewer refills. Some water reservoirs are removable and have handles, so you can easily carry them to the sink to fill and pristine. Others are permanently attached to the coffee maker, so you might want to keep a jug with a spout on hand to fill it. Others don’t have a water reservoir at all, requiring you to measure and add the amount of water you want to make each time.
✔️ Brewing options: While some single-serve coffee makers only make one cup, some models offer more brewing options, from single-serve espresso shots to 16-ounce brews (perfect for a travel mug). Coffee choices range from basic (like regular or powerful brewed coffee) to fancy (think iced drinks and even cappuccinos and lattes in more advanced models that have frothing attachments).
✔️ Speed: One of the benefits of a single-serve coffee maker is its quick brewing time. Some models have a powerful heating mechanism that can heat water and brew coffee in less than a minute. Others require you to heat and pour your own water over the ground coffee. In our tests, the average brewing time for an 8-ounce cup of coffee was about two minutes.
