Development Stage: Two-Day Oakland Educational Event at The Crown

One of the best things about coffee is that there’s always something recent to learn. A recent brewing technique or fermentation process or some recent idea on how to make the best shot. There’s no shortage of complexity when it comes to coffee, so opportunities to dive deeper are always present.

In Oakland, Royal Coffee is testing the idea Development stagea brand recent educational event. Development Stage, which will take place over two days in September, brings together the biggest names in the Bay Area coffee industry, as well as experts from other food and beverage industries, for a community event focused on sharing and expanding coffee knowledge.

The event will be held at The Crown, Royal Coffee’s tasting room and lab. Attendees will be treated to two days of tastings, coffee pairings, panel discussions and lectures. Topics include the Bay Area’s roaster/farmer connections, the history of coffee in the Bay, supply chain equity and innovative roaster-retailer business models. It will feature coffee professionals like American master barista Katie Carguilo of Counter Culture, Geoff Watts, Jen Apodaca of Mother Tongue, Devorah Freudiger of Equator Coffees and a number of Royals including Chris Kornman, Evan Gilman and CEO Max Nicholas-Fulmer.

They will be joined by winemaker Emily Fernwood, chocolatier Julia Street, perfumer Lakenda Wallace and fermenter Elizabeth Vecchiarelli, who will provide interdisciplinary context and recent perspectives on coffee.

It all takes place Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28 at The Crown in Oakland. Tickets for the two-day event are $175 and are available for purchase on the Royal Coffee website. The night before, there will be a “free preview” event at Commune, hosted by Oscillations Coffee, featuring music, airy bites, and drinks. The event is open to the public.
