SAN FRANCISCO (CROWN) — Locally popular coffee chain Philz Coffee has moved its headquarters from San Francisco to Oakland, CEO Mahesh Sadarangani said in a statement Friday. The previous San Francisco headquarters was in the Dogpatch neighborhood.
The company was founded in San Francisco more than 20 years ago, with its first store in the Mission District. Philz Coffee’s up-to-date Oakland headquarters will be housed in the company’s coffee roasting facility.
Sadarangani said the current lease for the SF building “no longer aligns with our needs as a company,” adding that this is in part because nearly all of Philz’s corporate team members work entirely remotely.
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is excited and “honored” the San Francisco-founded company is moving to her city.
The move to Oakland comes months after Philz closed its first store in San Francisco’s Mission District last October.
Since its founding in 2003, Philz Coffee now has dozens of locations across California, including Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Diego counties. There are six locations in the Chicago area.
“We want to continue to be a part of our community and have a robust presence in the Bay Area,” Sadarangani said.
