The Espresso Rise: A Modern Feature-Length Documentary by the Accademia del Caffè Espresso

There is so much high-quality coffee content readily available to anyone who wants to seek it out. Coffee media is no longer the arena of established brands; everyday people around the world have the opportunity to create their own coffee media through social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube. That’s one reason we expanded the Sprudge Design Awards this year to include Best Coffee Photographer of the Year, honoring visual storytellers in the coffee space, both professionals and amateurs.

Most coffee media these days is low, from sub-minute Instagram stories and TikToks to 10-minute YouTube videos. But sometimes coffee needs a little more time than a social media post can offer to tell a fuller story. Sometimes a documentary is needed. And this is it. Espresso Coffee Academy has to offer. The MarzocoThe cultural center announced the release a recent documentary film that will be released as part of Italian Film Festival in Melbourne.

According to a press release, it documents “Italian emigrants who have promoted espresso culture around the world over the years.” The nearly hour-long film, produced entirely in-house by Accademia and directed by Enrico Ventrice, will tell the story of espresso “from Italian tradition to global cultural phenomenon” through “the challenges and anecdotes of the many emigrants who have dedicated their lives to this beverage.”

The film will premiere today, September 24 at the Melbourne Italian Film Festival and will be screened in Palace Cinema on Norton Street and Penny Lane. It will then be shown in Sydney on October 1, International Coffee Day.

The film is part of a larger Accademia project documenting the history and importance of Italian migrants in the spread of espresso around the world. The initial part of the project, titled “Coffee Migrant | Migrant Coffee – BRAZIL Chapter II,” which depicts the migration of millions of Italians to Brazil in the 19th and 20th centuries, is currently on display in Florence. A follow-up installation, Coffee Migrant | Migrant Coffee – NEW WORLDS Chapter II, will be released next year.
