Reuse and composting: Introducing the recent eco-friendly cup of coffee

Disposable coffee cups are gone, reusable cups have appeared. At Sprudge, we love reusable cups. Although there are more and more good, single-use compostable materials available on the market, there is no guarantee that they will be properly disposed of and will not end up in a landfill, where their decomposition time increases exponentially.

So the obvious alternative is reusable products, but many of them are made of plastic, which is fine, but not ideal. We live in a world of polymers, so our goal is always to reduce plastic consumption wherever possible, even for things we apply repeatedly. There’s a recent option on the market for those looking for plastic-free, reusable coffee cups: a cup of Aromac. It’s an “all-natural, reusable coffee mug” that’s “home compostable and biodegradable” and is now available on Kickstarter.

Created by a resident of London EarthlyAromacup is a material certified for contact with food, made from a mixture of bamboo fiber and vegetable starch derived from wheat, corn and potato residues. The 300ml pot is advertised as dishwasher secure and resistant to temperatures ranging from -10°C to 100°C (14°F to 212°F), making it suitable for everyday apply .

The expected lifespan of an Aromacup is two years, after which it is ready to return to earth. Biodegradable and suitable for home compost bins, Aromacup can simply be buried in the ground or placed in a composter, where it will take approximately 18 months to decompose. Admittedly, this is a long time for those who apply the compost they create. Maybe break the cup a little before throwing it in the trash to break it into smaller pieces, which sounds good anyway.

Aromacup cups in five different colors: sea, aqua, moss, sand and coral. We’ve already doubled our campaign goal with less than four weeks left, but there are still plenty of rewards to be had. Retailing at $19 per cup, sponsor discounts ranging from 10% to 24% are offered, depending on quantity purchased. Deliveries are scheduled to start in March 2025.

Aromacup is the first of Earthmade’s compostable coffee products. Still in progress Aromaboxcompostable, reusable coffee packaging, available in sizes 250 g and 500 g.
