Fairwave acquires black and white coffee, Lem Butler

Fairwave specialty coffee color He made the biggest acquisition so far. The portfolio of the conglomerate from Kansas City, based in Missouri, already has known coffee brands such as Messenger Coffee, Spyhouse, Anodyne and the ceremony. And now their expansion on the east coast continues with the acquisition of Raleigh in North Carolina Black & White Coffee Roasters.

Announced on Wednesday, April 2– which is close enough to some excessive joking that I had to check twice and triplely, that it was a true story- Black & White, and its three locations became the 12th brand under the Fairwave umbrella. This is less than a month after organizing the US Barista Championships in 2025.

“This partnership is an thrilling novel chapter for Black & White,” says co -founder Kyle Ramage. “This is a natural progress that will allow us to build our existing foundation and achieve novel heights.”

The second critical revelation in a press release announcing the takeover is the departure of the co -founder and American barista champion 2016 Lem Butler. Together with Ramage, his successor at the USBC, Butler began Black & White in 2017 and since then he has grown into the name of the household in a special world of coffee. According to a press release, while Butler will no longer be equal to steamy and wave, “will remain involved in supporting a significant and ethical contribution to the specialist coffee industry.”

“I am incredibly proud of the community we built in Black & White,” says Butler. “We have created a unique and available elite impressions with coffee and I am sure that this partnership will ensure further success of our team.”

After the operational hierarchy of other Fairwave acquisitions, Ramage will remain in order to supervise the operation, as well as the expansion of the brand.

It is perhaps one of the most shocking acquisitions in a special world of coffee, there with such as Get Em Tiger from Nee G&B Coffee have neither Glanville nor Babinski as part of the operation. Unlike other acquisitions of the main coffee brands, Black & White is relatively newborn; Spyhouse, Anodyne and the ceremony have been for over two decades before the purchase. This is currently the trajectory of specialist coffee and talks about the level of uncertainty, when one of the most recognizable brands in American special coffee is to have ownership for a capital entity.
