Lost among recent hells of coffee production – features of instability, climate change, tariffs, etc. – are elderly, such as coffee beetle. We here in consumer countries we could mistakenly assume that this little pest was a past. Heck, last time we talked about them here in Spudge, returned in 2023, when Hawai was considering the terrifying plan for release of the os. But coffee beetle is an elderly news. In fact, in 2023, $ 1 billion compensation is estimated for global coffee supply.
So the beetle is still a problem. But facilitate can be on the horizon, as researchers develop A new method of quick cherry identification that was infected by a coffee beetle.
As reported Phys.orgThe methodology consists in creating researchers from the Australian University of Edith Cowan. It works by having drones taking photos of crops, which are then analyzed in terms of color and shape using “L-Systems software”, image processing methods that imitate a human vision.
Coffee beetles are incredibly compact, which makes it tough to see with the naked eye. Instead of looking for insects themselves, this technology is looking for influence on coffee cherries.
“If you imagine when you drill a piece of wood, you will see compact fragments of sawdust gather around the outside of the hole,” says Dr. David Cook, one of the authors of the study. “In the same way, when the drill monotonous coffee berry, they leave a huge amount of debris called Frass and it is much easier to identify.”
With faster detection, farmers can stop the coffee beetle from spreading by the rest of the crop, alleviating total damage. And basic imaging software can be adapted to other pests affecting other crops.
This is good news for coffee producers around the world. The solution is and I think that the verdict here is rather unanimous, much better than OS.
