What is Chagaccino? Is mushroom coffee secure to drink?

What is Chagaccino? Chagaccino is an earthy variation of cappuccino, a milk drink and espresso with the addition of chaga mushrooms that grow wild on the slopes of birch trees. Chaga mushrooms are believed to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and are typically consumed in powdered form mixed with a scorching drink such as coffee or tea. Chaga is also classified as an adaptogen, which means it is believed to aid our body restore balance, focus and serene.

As with all supplements, you’ll see varying claims about the power of chaga, depending on the sources you exploit. And as with all supplements, you should bring a fit dose of skepticism to anything that promises things like stress relief and anti-aging benefits without the side effects.

Does chagaccino always contain coffee?

Chaga itself is considered an acquired taste, so many people enjoy its potential benefits in coffee. A typical chagaccino will include chaga powder and espresso, along with steamed milk (or a plant-based equivalent) and spices like vanilla, cinnamon, and cocoa. It’s a way to embrace health and enjoy it at the same time.

Wait, I thought we DON’T want fungus in our coffee?

Although some microfungi are known to produce mycotoxins, these are specific toxin-producing fungi (such as Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium) and their effect is not the same as adding ground chaga powder to coffee.

My friend’s cousin is a nurse and told me that these types of supplements can cause liver damage. Is that true?

Sprudge is not a doctor, but we recommend consulting one before adding any supplement to your diet. Even if your favorite and most trusted coffee shop is decorated with cocoa and cinnamon, it is always wise to consult your doctor about possible interactions with existing medical conditions or medications. An internet search or word of mouth is not always enough: you are just as likely to find sources that confirm this chaga inhibits liver cancer as studies warning of dangers down liver and kidneys and its impact on blood thinners and blood sugar levels.

OK, I think I still want to try this, but… can you taste the mushroom? What does chagaccino taste like?

Chaga is said to have an earthy flavor with a hint of bitterness, which is why many coffee shops add sweeteners and sweet spices to their drinks. (Of course, you can also just order a mocha.)

Where can I drink chagaccino?

Nowadays, chagaccino is on the menu of many cafes. You may need to look under specialty drinks, near turmeric lattes and so on. Some people may call this drink simply “mushroom coffee,” so try both if you’re looking online for a cup in your area.

Can I make chagaccino at home?

Of course you can! While many chagaccinos are made like cappuccinos—with espresso and steamed milk or a milk alternative—you can make any chaga/coffee combination at home, using your own chaga powder and your own coffee drink. Keep in mind that you’ll still probably want to tone it down fun-gal with honey, maple syrup, cinnamon, or even pumpkin spice.
