TV shows and movies Java Love has also made a name for itself in Montclair by bucking trends and pursuing its own distinct vision of inclusivity and quality coffee. Could you tell me something about your company for those who don’t know it?
We are a compact, woman-owned, LGBTQ+ Business Enterprise certified roastery founded in 2011 with a roastery, two cafes, e-commerce, wholesale, and a paid roastery. This will be our third cafe in Montclair, NJ. We focus on sustainable sourcing, as well as many eco-friendly practices like discounting reusable beverage and bean packaging, composting all grounds, and using compostable single-use products. We hire for diversity and create secure spaces in our community, and we are known as leaders in our city for investing our time and donations into LGBTQ+ education, arts, and initiatives. And we have some seriously good coffee!!
Can you tell us a little about the novel space?
We are transforming a 400 square foot burger joint into a full-fledged coffee shop with our full beverage menu, plus a hood and grill for fresh, made-to-order breakfasts and lunches, as well as all-natural smoothies. Our baked goods are sourced from local bakeries and we focus on local, fresh and fit options. We are currently renovating and just finished novel flooring and painting.
What is your approach to coffee?
We don’t follow trends. We’ve been in the industry for 13 years and have seen trends come and go. Our customers appreciate our consistency in flavor profiles and offerings. We start with high-quality beans, sourced with integrity to farmers and the environment, and roast in compact batches to preserve the integrity of flavor in each batch. We are a certified fair trade and Rainforest Alliance roastery, and for our 10th anniversary, we’ve exclusively featured women coffee producers.
Are there any machines, coffees, or specialized equipment in the queue?
San Remo F18, Marzocco Line, Rabbit brewery, Bunn grinder, ice machines, refrigeration etc.
How does your project address sustainability issues?
As a company, we focus on sustainable practices. We pay to compost all of our land and have listed a few other practices above. We employ recycled wood in our décor throughout our stores, and we also reuse materials from shipping containers.
Do you work with craftsmen, architects or creatives that you would like to mention?
Shaun Killman’s Designs—We worked with Shaun on all of our stores and he helped us create our aesthetic. He is a champion of using recycled and upcycled materials and helped us with that sustainable part of our builds.
Thank you!
Thanks!
