Espresso and Neapolitan pizza are coming to La Jolla
Bird Rock Coffee Roasters plans to open its 10th cafe in overdue spring or early summer at La Jolla Village Drive and Villa La Jolla Drive.
There is one major difference: in addition to coffee and espresso, it will serve wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza. This menu is still being developed, said Bird Rock owner Jeff Taylor.
“We’re ready to go. Everything is in place. We’re just waiting for the building permit from UCSD and then we’ll be good to go,” Taylor said.
The café-restaurant will have four reserved parking spaces, a 1,000-square-foot patio with seating and about 1,500 square feet of indoor space. It is part of a public-private investment on the University of California property that will be shared by UC San Diego Health, the medical school, UC San Diego Extension and the café, according to UCSD.
Bird Rock, a prominent local roastery that won the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award, Coffee Roaster of the Year, has opened two cafes in 2022 in Encinitas and on the UC San Diego campus. Others are located in Little Italy, Bressi Ranch, Bay Park and the mothership: Bird Rock.
Pizza is one of the areas this roastery exceeds. It also recently introduced an espresso i catering truck Espresso Medic from San Diegocoffee and espresso machine service.
Holey moley: Bagels are back
McDonald’s brings back an elderly favorite: bagel breakfast sandwiches. In a coup for San Diego, they went on sale Wednesday at a local McDonald’s – ahead of a wider release next week.
There are three options: Bacon, Egg and Cheese, Sausage, Egg and CheeseAND Steak, egg and cheese.
A sample of each reveals that they all feature balmy, melted American cheese, creamy breakfast sauce, and an egg sandwiched between lightly toasted bagel slices. The steak bagel has grilled onions.
Protein is another way they differ: there’s less of it – crispy applewood bacon (25 grams) – or more of it: the steak patty (34 grams). The sausage falls between the two and weighs 27 grams. Their value ranges from 590 to 710 calories. According to the data, the bacon version costs an average of $4.76 mc-menu.com.
“Although bagel sandwiches were originally introduced in 2000, they were discontinued around 2019…much to the disappointment of steadfast fans,” the retail site The Daily Meal wrote.
