Acceleration is one of the driving forces behind the line of canned, ready-to-drink frosty beverages in the form of specialty coffee. The Green Bay, Wisconsin-based brand partnered with major specialty coffee roasters such as Intelligentsia, George Howell, Madcap and Dayglow to produce canned frosty brew coffee for each brand using a proprietary method.
Now Snapchill announces voluntary recall of all its canned coffee products due to concerns that they may contain botulinum toxin, which can lead to botulism.
In a press release, Snapchill stated that “the current process may lead to the growth and production of a deadly toxin”, although at press time, no cases of illness had been reported and no cans of Snapchill coffee had been found to contain botulinum toxin. The recall affects over 250 different lines of RTD coffee produced by Snapchill and distributed nationwide by its roasting partners.
The problem first came to lithe when the U.S. Food and Drunk Administration warned the brand that the “low-acid canned food manufacturing process” it uses to produce its frosty brew coffee “was not reported to the FDA, which is a regulatory requirement.”
When asked for comment, Snapchill told Sprudge: “At Snapchill, the safety and satisfaction of our customers are our top priorities and we are working quickly to resolve the issue. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or concern this recall may cause. We are working with the FDA on solutions to resume production in line with standards.”
Snapchill will now undergo a multi-month FDA audit to verify the safety of its pasteurization process and find an interim solution that will allow the company to continue production.
In the meantime, Snapchill is telling consumers they should “either destroy the products or return the product to Snapchill or the place of purchase for a refund.” A full refund will be issued “with appropriate proof of purchase that includes a photo of the product(s) prior to destruction.” They have also set up an email to answer any questions consumers may have at Compliance@Snapchill.com.
