AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) — Olive oil in coffee? It’s the latest flavor combination from Starbucks as it introduces a novel line of specialty drinks to stores nationwide.

Starbucks introduced a new line of Oleato drinks to the market in February, making it available first in Italy, then in Southern California, Japan, the Middle East and the UK.


The drinks include Starbucks Arabica coffee enriched with extra virgin olive oil from the Italian brand Partanna, which “creates a completely novel experience,” the company assures. explain.

The line of products with added olive oil includes:

  • Oleato cafe latte: featherlight roasted espresso with extra virgin olive oil and steamed with oat milk
  • Oleato iced shaken espresso: a coffee drink with toffee nuts, espresso and oat milk, enriched with extra virgin olive oil
  • Oleato golden foam cool brew: cool foam with the addition of extra virgin olive oil on top of cool brew

Oleato products are now available in additional stores in Up-to-date York, Illinois, California and Washington state.

You can find the nearest Starbucks café serving Oleato coffee by using the company’s website Find a store and using the “Oleato Drinks” filter.

CEO Howard Schultz previously said in press release that the idea of ​​adding olive oil to coffee came about during a trip to Sicily last year, where he “discovered the Mediterranean custom of consuming a teaspoon of olive oil every day.” One morning, he decided to add it to his coffee, describing the combination as “a delicious and unexpected alchemy.”

“Now there will be people who say, ‘Olive oil in the coffee?’ But the proof is in the cup. In more than 40 years, I can’t remember a time when I was more excited, more enthusiastic,” Schultz said. “It shows the pride, the quality, the passion, the heritage and the craftsmanship of what Starbucks can do.”

It didn’t get the best reaction from everyone, though. Some customers reported on Reddit that they had stomach issues, including “laxative” effectafter drinking Oleato.

Erin Palinski-Wade, a registered dietitian and nutritionist, said: CNN that the combination of the high fat content of olive oil drinks and the caffeine can cause cramps and the aforementioned toilet problem.
