2023 was an exhilarating year for specialty coffee on the West Coast, with no shortage of bold up-to-date café designs and global coffee connections on a hyperlocal level.
While many of the coffee shops featured below are newcomers to the coffee world, several are bold moves by long-established coffee institutions, demonstrating the recovery and optimism in the post-pandemic retail landscape.
The first café under the own brand of the 45-year-old roastery was opened in Oakland, California Mr. Espresso. In Hawai’i, Big Island Coffee Roastersa 2022 Roast Magazine Roaster of the Year finalist, has opened its first flagship roastery. And in Portland, Oregon, the classic Italian espresso specialist Spell’s Coffee opened a store that is not only regaining its place as a fixture in the city center, but is contributing to the city’s revitalization.
