Third Wave Water White Paper Highlights Water Value
AND new white paper published by a supplier of mineral water solutions The third wave of water highlights the effects of using calibrated water profiles during the cupping process. The article suggests specific goals within Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Water Profile Range could lead to greater consistency across the coffee value chain, and also suggests that improved water profiles at producers and exporters could result in higher coffee yields and ultimately higher revenues.
SCA asks for feedback on the “extrinsic” values of coffee
This Specialty Coffee Association asks members for their opinion on “external values” of coffee as the company continues to transform its Coffee Value Assessment, a broad modern system designed to replace years of cupping forms and group protocols for coffee professionals. Information on the 5-minute “Extrinsic Values Survey” — which looks at non-intrinsic coffee attributes such as origin, brand and sustainability — is available here.
ICO publishes monthly report for August
The International Coffee Organization (ICO) has published its monthly report for Augustwith the ICO Composite Indicator Price (I-CIP) averaging $1.5453 per pound. The report notes that global coffee production fell 1.4% in 2021-22, while consumption rose 4.2%. Another shortfall — estimated at 7.3 million 60-kilogram bags — is predicted for 2022-23.
Global Coffee Platform Updates Banned Pesticide List
An international organization that brings together members of the coffee industry Global Coffee Platform updated his list of banned and withdrawn pesticides in the coffee sector. The original list was published in 2021 with the launch of the GCP Sustainability Reference Code. Another modern report from the group found that 70% of green coffee purchased by the world’s eight largest coffee companies met some recognized sustainability standards.
SCA and Diedrich Announce Roasters Guild Retreat Scholarship Recipients

Death Wish is suing Death Before Decaf Australia
Novel York Coffee Roastery Death Wish Coffee he submitted trademark infringement lawsuit against Australian coffee company Death Before Decaf. The lawsuit was filed about three months after Death Wish filed a similar lawsuit against another morbidity-focused brand, Death Hell Coffee.
Dunkin’ faces first union crackdown in over 12 years
Workers at a Dunkin’ location in Cincinnati, Ohio, filed for a union election tardy last month. It’s the first union election filing involving Dunkin’ in more than a decade, according to Restaurant Dive Analysis from the files of the National Labor Relations Board.
Pershing Acquires Greater Goods in East Austin
Austin, Texas based social club and hospitality company Pershing took over ownership of the former Greater Goods Coffee at 2501 E. 5th, according to a report Culture Map. This a change of owner was signaled when Greater Goods announced it plans to expand its Dripping Springs location to accommodate training and tastings. Greater Goods Coffee won in 2021. Five Roaster of the Year magazine award in the “micro” category.
Atomic Coffee Roasters opens to the public
Peabody, Massachusetts-based Atomic Coffee Roastery opened the doors to its modern North Shore roastery public tours and educational activities about coffee. The modern program is designed to engage people of all levels of coffee experience, from curious novices to coffee professionals.
Lavazza returns as US Open tennis sponsor
Italian coffee giant Lavazza returned as the official coffee sponsor of the US Open tennis tournament, currently taking place in Novel York. The company has sponsored the US Open since 2015.
