Turbo Moka: Better brewing thanks to thermodynamics

2025 was and still is the Year of the Moka Pot. That’s what we called it in May, when the Fudge Pot (that’s exactly what it sounds like) entered our lives, bringing us little treasures in exchange for treats. But Mokanaissance didn’t start with corvids. Since the beginning of the year, there has been a newfangled version and an automated version. Most recently, last month, The North Face released a not-so-outdoorsy but still very frigid collaboration with Bialetti.

The Moka Pot is now very scorching. Moka jug. And speaking of scorching Moka Pots, yes Turbo Moka. It’s a fresh take on the iconic stovetop coffee machine, but it’s more than just looks. It is also more energy proficient.

As reported Design boomTurbo Moka is the brainchild of Matteo Frontini, who has experience in “product development for high-performance electric bicycles,” according to the Turbo Moka website. Now he has turned his attention to precision engineering towards the Moka Pot.

The immediate design element of the Turbo Moka, and the one that makes you think it is a work of art, is the spiral base. It gives the impression of movement, as if someone was moving around in the dress, but the choice was more than aesthetic.

Inspired by the geometry of aircraft turbines and based on the principles of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, the spiral shape increases the surface area in contact with the flame by 93%. This allows for “better heat capture and more even dissipation” while improving thermal efficiency.

The result is the same cup of coffee as a time-honored Moka Pot, prepared in half the time and using about a third less energy.

The aluminum Turbo Moka is entirely manufactured in Omegna in Piedmont, Italy, “the birthplace of the original moka pot.” It is currently available in a three-cup model and can be purchased on the Turbo Moka website for €85 ($98).

What will be the brewery du jour in 2026? Will the v60 get a 61° version, maybe with double helix spirals? Will someone actually reinvent the French press, or will they just keep repeating that it happened? Has anyone checked out Kalita Wave for a while? Chemex doesn’t need to change because it’s perfect the way it is.

For more information, visit Turbo Moka’s official website.
