June Coffee Review: A Novel Brunch Cafe on the East Coast

June Coffee is a novel brunch spot on the East Coast

The Joo Chiat district is home to a number of stylish cafes, including Natsu Cafe AND In the walls. Now a novel cafe, June coffeecreated by the founders September coffeerecently opened its doors, bringing stout brioche toast, layered lattes and more to the region.

Intrigued, my friend and I headed to June Coffee on a Thursday afternoon to try it for ourselves. Despite arriving a little after lunchtime, we were surprised to find the cafe was still fairly busy. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait too long for our seats.

Food at June Coffee

While both June Coffee and September Coffee serve Western cuisine, they offer different main courses and sides. To start, we ordered Beef Tenderloin Croffle ($25++).

I was surprised by the portion size when the dish was served — it came with a mountain of sliced beef tenderloin, pickled onions, demi-glace, and zingy mayo on the croffle. It also came with a black pepper sauce on the side.

We really liked how crispy and featherlight the croffle was. The beef on the other hand was incredibly tender, providing contrasting textures to the croffle. In terms of taste, I appreciated the tartness that the pickled onions provided, which kept the dish from being too weighty. Overall, both my colleague and I really enjoyed this.

Then we got Pappardelle with Truffle Mushrooms ($19++) to share. This pasta is made with a mix of shiitake, king oyster and shimeiji mushrooms, tossed in a cream sauce with truffles and fresh pappardelle pasta.

However, the pasta was a bit starchy, leaving a cakey feel in the mouth after each bite. The wealthy cream sauce also contributed to the dish being tedious, making it challenging to finish. Regardless, we appreciated the generous helping of mushrooms in this dish.

For our last main course, the waiter recommended Honey, Lemon and Ricotta French Toast ($17++). The dish was served on a stout slice of brioche toast, with ricotta cheese and pecans on top. It was drizzled with honey for a sweet taste.

Maybe because my partner and I like savory flavors, this dish wasn’t really our style. There was also a slightly zingy flavor that we both had a challenging time appreciating. This dish would probably be better suited for cheese lovers!

We got it Potato Salad ($10++) for our shared sides because we wanted something special and fortunately we were not disappointed. This dish was served with baked novel potatoes, mayonnaise, pickled eggs, bacon and feta cheese.

The baby potatoes were cut into bite-sized pieces and evenly coated with mayonnaise. The bacon added a zingy flavor that made the dish even more enjoyable. Finally, the addition of ajitama eggs gave the dish a creamy texture.

June Coffee also has a good selection of drinks. My friend chose Iced Pistachio Latte ($9++)which had a stout layer of pistachio cream, adding a nutty flavor to the coffee. Matcha lovers will definitely be delighted Iced Kinako Matcha ($8++)which is topped with soy foam with sea salt and kinako powder. They also offer other lattes such as Black Sesame Latte ($8++)which is another very popular choice!

The Atmosphere at June Coffee

June Coffee has a warm atmosphere with a relaxed vibe where customers can meet up with friends. The cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating, and the emphasis is on wooden furniture that gives the space a cozy feel. The staff is also incredibly warm and well-versed in the menu, so don’t hesitate to ask them for recommendations!

June Coffee is a nine-minute walk away Marine Parade Underground Station.

Verdict

Overall, I found the menu to be quite unique in both food and drink. I had a really nice time there and loved the atmosphere of the cafe. I would definitely recommend this cafe if you are looking for a place to go on a date!
