Keurig Unveils Plans for Plastic-Free Coffee Pods

Keurig Alta Coffee Maker with KRounds

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Keurig has unveiled a vision for a modern kind of single-serve coffee.

The plastic-free K-Rounds capsules, which are made from roasted coffee beans and protected by a plant-based coating, will work in the modern Keurig Alta coffee machine, allowing you to prepare a variety of balmy and frosty beverages barista-style, the production company said on its website last week.

From a robust espresso with velvety crema to a balmy cup of coffee, K-Rounds come in different sizes depending on the type of drink. These capsules will be marked with a code that the Keurig Alta coffee machine reads to know the pressure and extraction profile needed to achieve “the full flavor, aroma and richness of each coffee variety,” the company said.

“Thirty years ago, Keurig changed the way consumers brew coffee with the introduction of the K-Cup single-serve coffee system,” said Keurig Dr Pepper President and CEO Bob Gamgort. “Today, we’re bringing all of our expertise to a revolutionary modern system that will redefine how consumers brew coffee for decades to come.”

Keurig Dr Pepper will begin beta testing in early fall 2024. receive feedback from consumers.

The company added that not only are K-Rounds capsules plastic-free, they can be thrown away like coffee grounds and are expected to be certified compostable.
