A local independent coffee festival is a lovely thing. In a world full of hospitality, groups organize “copy and paste” events on both coasts – following the well-known pattern of “[City] Coffee Festival” and featuring a number of questionable local coffee companies and charging an exorbitant fee for the privilege – an independent event is something completely different and refreshing. It’s the local coffee community coming together to highlight and celebrate what they have built. It’s organic. It allows you to see the local coffee scene through your own eyes.
That’s what it’s like with Baked Retreat. Now in its fourth year, Roast Retreat brings together Michigan’s best coffee roasters for a one-day festival in Detroit featuring food, music, art, raffles and, oh, lots of coffee.
Filed by Washed CoffeeThis year’s edition of the Roast Retreat will be the largest in history and will bring together (for now) 22 different coffee roasters, as well as importers, tea producers and equipment manufacturers. Roasters include names like Madcap, Sparrows, Desert Oasis, Anthology and Curious Coffee. Parts for espresso, Sanremo, Dona and Ghost Town Oats machines will also be available.
It will take place on Saturday, August 1street from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at The Eastern Cafe, each participating roaster will be brewing tasty coffee for attendees to sample side-by-side to better understand the unique character of each coffee company. And for those who fear the dreaded but ultimately unavoidable caffeine overload, Daphne’s Bagels will be on hand to lend a hand you cut through it with the carbs.
And of course, there will be plenty of raffle prizes, so be sure to stay seated at all times in case your name is called.
Tickets for the Roast Retreat are $25 and are available for purchase Here. The price includes a Roast Retreat tasting mug provided by Espresso Parts, which will come in handy almost immediately.
So instead of going to an steep coffee festival whose sole purpose is to turn a profit by pretending to have some stake in local events, find the nearest coffee event hosted by those who actually make the scene what it is, like Roast Retreat. We will all be much better off for it. More information can be found on Roast Retreat’s website official website.
