Dunkin’s Modern Summer Deal Just Dropped — Here’s What Our Dietitian Thinks

Summer is in full swing and Dunkin’s newest additions are here to support you beat the heat. On June 26, they released their summer menuwith five brand up-to-date titles and one returning favourite.

Several items in the up-to-date range draw inspiration from the well-known summer dessert: s’mores. The classic combination of marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker flavours is present in two up-to-date drinks: S’mores Frosty Brew AND Campfire S’mores Iced Coffee. You can also try the conventional bonfire, which is making a comeback S’mores Donut.

Dunkin’ has also partnered with Mike’s Scorching Honey to bring us some up-to-date savory options, including Scorching honey and bacon sandwich, Roll with balmy honey and bacon AND Snack with balmy honey and bacon.

Finally, for those looking for fruit-flavored energy drinks, we have a up-to-date Tornado Twist Sparkd’ Energy may suit your style better.

First of all we have S’mores Frosty Brew. The nutritional values of a diminutive drink are as follows:

  • Calories: 360
  • Carbohydrates: 44 grams
  • Total sugar content: 40 grams
  • Added sugars: 40 grams
  • Protein: 1 gram
  • Total fat content: 20 grams
  • Saturated fat: 2 grams
  • Sodium: 75mg

While this drink falls within our recommended sodium guidelines, it does contain quite a few added sugars and calories. The polished icy brew is topped with creamy marshmallow icy foam and graham crumble, which is most likely responsible for the added sugar and calories.

“Most Americans consume too much added sugar, and one of the main sources of it is sugar-sweetened beverages,” says Jessica Ball, MS, RD, a registered dietitian and nutrition editor at Eat well. “The American Heart Association recommends no more than 36 grams of added sugar per day, and this drink exceeds that. That doesn’t mean you can’t have it if you like it, but it’s better for special occasions than your daily coffee.”

Next we have information about nutritional values for the little one Campfire S’mores Iced Coffee:

  • Calories: 590
  • Carbohydrates: 94 grams
  • Total sugar content: 84 G
  • Added sugars: 81 grams
  • Protein: 5 grams
  • Total fat content: 22 grams
  • Saturated fat: 13 grams
  • Sodium: 150mg

This frozen drink is also high in calories, saturated fat and sodium, and it also contains a significant amount of added sugar. With 84 grams of added sugar per serving, it has more than 230% of the maximum recommended daily intake according to the AHA. The drink features vanilla and s’mores flavors mixed with coffee and is topped with whipped cream, mocha topping and graham cracker crumbs, which contribute to the nutritional profile.

“I would suggest thinking of this menu item as a dessert or a milkshake rather than your typical morning coffee, because that’s the nutritional profile. All of these foods fit into a fit eating pattern, but it’s best to eat them less often for special occasions,” Ball says.

For S’mores Donut, nutritional information:

  • Calories: 370
  • Carbohydrates: 45 grams
  • Total sugar content: 22 grams
  • Added sugars: 22 grams
  • Protein: 5 grams
  • Total fat content: 18g
  • Saturated fat: 8 grams
  • Sodium: 320mg

Dunkin’ is bringing back a fan-favorite doughnut with a marshmallow filling, chocolate frosting, and graham cracker crumbs. While they tout the breakfast cookie as the perfect pairing with any of the aforementioned s’mores drinks, we might suggest a less sweet drink to quench your thirst. It’s high in added sugar and saturated fat, so it’s best to treat it more as a dessert than a breakfast dish.

Moving on to the balmy news about honey, let’s take a closer look at the nutritional information Scorching honey and bacon sandwich:

  • Calories: 670
  • Carbohydrates: 58 grams
  • Total sugar content: 21 G
  • Added sugars: 20 grams
  • Protein: 20 grams
  • Total fat content: 39 grams
  • Saturated fat: 16 grams
  • Sodium: 1010mg

There’s a lot going on in this sandwich, with its balmy honey bacon, egg, and melted white cheddar cheese on a buttery brioche bun, drizzled with Mike’s Scorching Honey. It’s pretty high in sodium, saturated fat, and calories for a breakfast option, with more than twice our recommended maximum (500 calories and 480 milligrams of sodium) for a main course. Still, its 20 grams of protein meets our parameters for a high-protein breakfast.

“Sodium and saturated fat are other nutrients that most Americans overdo, which can lead to things like high blood pressure and a higher risk of heart disease over time,” Ball says. “The sandwich sounds delicious with its tangy bacon and sweet, balmy honey, and the protein in it can be a filling option in a pinch. However, due to the sodium and saturated fat, I wouldn’t recommend eating it regularly.”

Then, Scorching honey and bacon alarm clock:

  • Calories: 250
  • Carbohydrates: 18 grams
  • Total sugar content: 4 G
  • Added sugars: 3 grams
  • Protein: 11 grams
  • Total fat content: 15 grams
  • Saturated fat: 6 grams
  • Sodium: 590mg

If you’re really dying to try Mike’s Scorching Honey collaboration, Dunkin’s up-to-date breakfast wrap is much closer to our nutritional parameters. While it still has a fair amount of sodium, the calories in this wrap are significantly lower than its sandwich counterpart.

“When you eat something high in sodium, like the balmy honey menu, make sure you drink plenty of water, move your body and pair it with a source of potassium, like fruit. This can support your body flush out excess sodium naturally,” Ball advises.

The last item on the summer menu is Tornado Twist Sparkd Energy Drink, with nutritional information for little ones:

  • Calories: 80
  • Carbohydrates: 20 grams
  • Total sugar content: 18 grams
  • Added sugars: 18 grams
  • Protein: 0 grams
  • Total fat content: 0 gram
  • Saturated fat: 0 grams
  • Sodium: 135mg
  • Caffeine: 144 mg (approx.)

A juicy combination of raspberry, strawberry, peach and lychee, this caffeinated energy drink has plenty of flavor thanks to a combination of Dunkin’s existing Berry Burst Sparkd’ and Peach Sunshine Sparkd’. The refreshing drink meets our drink parameters, so it’s worth a try if you’re looking for something up-to-date.

“The 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend consuming a maximum of 400 milligrams of caffeine per day. This drink has a similar caffeine content to an 8-ounce cup of coffee, so it can be a safe and sound choice for those who need an energy boost, Ball says. “That said, it does have a high added sugar content compared to coffee or tea, so be mindful of how it fits into your routine.”

Summary

There’s no denying the appeal of these summer additions to the Dunkin’ menu. Nostalgic flavors like s’mores, invigorating partnerships with Mike’s Scorching Honey, and fruity energy drinks certainly add to the appeal, although they may not be the ideal addition to your regular breakfast routine. We suggest you be aware of the amount of added sugar, sodium, and calories they contain. That said, all foods can fit into a fit eating regimen, and these foods and drinks can be something special to enjoy in moderation. So stop by your local Dunkin’ and try out these up-to-date summer items!
