Cool brew and donut flavored goat cheese: good or baaaaad?

Coffee and cheese may seem like strange bedfellows, yet their combination has been seen time and time again in specialty coffees. Denver Commercial— a Michelin Guide-recommended restaurant run by chef Alex Seidel, serving cheese from Fruition Farms and Creamery, one of his side projects, and offered many combinations of coffee, espresso and cheese. Caffé by Mr. Espresso Oakland recently introduced a special drink inspired by Filipino flavors and using ricotta cheese. And always willing to try something wild with coffee (see: coffee kombucha and coffee licorice), Danish Coffee Collective they once made their own coffee cheese.

At this point, pairing coffee and cheese goes back at least a decade, almost enough to be called more or less a time-honored tradition. But even so, there are still lines that should not be crossed. One of them is goat cheese. Feta’s creamier and spicier cousin has just appeared donut flavored cold brew and faceliftand this time we’ve gone too far… unless it’s actually good?

As reported Dairy productsMilwaukee, Wisconsin’s undisputed center for dairy news and culture Montchevre have released what they call a “first-of-its-kind” goat cheese with a flavor that mimics chilly brew and donuts. More specifically, a recent cheese that can be found under the “Fresh logs”, which is a regrettable choice of words on their part – it is said to have the taste of “luxurious coffee” and “the sweetness of a doughnut”.

Jenny Englert, chief marketing officer at Montchevre parent company Saputo USA, states: “We are always analyzing consumer insights to stay ahead of trends, and demand for adventurous goat cheese profiles and flavor combinations continues to grow year over year. The launch of the first-of-its-kind Cool Brew & Donuts goat cheese is another example of how we continue to offer our customers an even wider range of flavors to discover.”

So how exactly can you enjoy chilly brew and goat cheese donuts, a combination of bitter, savory and sweet? According to Montchevre, “breakfast toast and breakfast charcuterie boards” are the main opportunities for such flavor explorations. Which seems a bit far-fetched, if we’re being candid. Oh really, coffee and donuts for breakfast? You don’t speak. What about dinner? Coffee fillings and sugar glazes go great with ham, so why not add a little coffee flavor to your pork tenderloin with chilly brew and goat cheese donuts. Or maybe stuff it with mushrooms. If we want adventure, let’s have an adventure.

Either way, Montchevre’s Cool Brew and Donut Goat Cheese products are available in retail stores nationwide. You can also drink good coffee and eat a handmade donut with goat cheese frosting or something similar. Actually, that sounds better.
