If you’re not familiar with San Diego, or more specifically Encinitas, let me share a local secret: Encinitas has all the charm you’re looking for when traveling in San Diego. Known for its laid-back, beachy, sometimes “crunchy” vibe, Encinitas once held the record for the most yoga per capita in San Diego County. The same could probably be said about his coffee shops today.
The city is walkable, spirited and full of options, you can barely walk down the block without running into a café, roastery or even a coffee bar. Below are a few standout shops leading the Encinitas coffee scene, but there are many more worth exploring. One more tip: all of these places are within walking distance to the beach. So grab your drink of choice, head towards the ocean, sink your toes into the sand, watch the surf and enjoy the moment. It’s pure magic.
Ironsmith Coffee Roasters
On the northern stretch of Coast Highway 101, the main road that runs straight through Encinitas, you’ll find Ironsmith Coffee Roasters. Owner Matt Delarosa is a USMC veteran and hands-on operator, so there’s a good chance you’ll catch him behind the bar, pulling shots or a flowing drink. The store itself is petite but full of character, with roll-up garage doors, sleek metal finishes and a smoking room apparent behind the bar. Although the space is tight, the atmosphere is magnetic, fueled by an obvious labor of love. Seating is circumscribed, just a few tables inside, a few bar seats and a few tables outside, but that’s all you need when you can sip coffee while watching Ancient Woodys Down 101 like something out of a Boys on the Beach album cover. Delarosa is as committed to sourcing as he is to serving, traveling frequently to coffee-producing countries and serving an array of delicious offerings from throughout Latin America and Africa.
Coffee necessary
On the border of Encinitas proper and its northern district of Leucadia, literally withdrawn into a residential area, you will find Coffee necessary. Sharing a space with an art studio, a must have that charming atmosphere, as if you had discovered a gem. The store is beautifully constructed with polished concrete floors, hot wood accents, pops of pink, and lots of greenery, but beyond the look, they take coffee seriously and lead the Encinitas coffee scene.
One recent standout signature drink was called Bloomed Fig: Black Bondor Espresso with Turkish fig, orange peel, vanilla, orange blossom and milk. If you’re more of a purist, you’re covered too. Necessity takes pride in its sourcing, from electrifying Colombian varieties to brilliant, fruity Ethiopian offerings. Ask the baristas and they will be cheerful to walk you through the details. The up-to-date location will open in tardy 2025, conveniently located just off the 101st.
HIT
HIT (all hats always) serves juice, empanadas and, most importantly, coffee, all under one roof. Two roofs, actually. They have a pair of locations: one in Cardiff-by-the-Sea and the other in Leucadia. The Cardiff flagship store is located in a retro shopping center just off the 101, tucked behind the Cardiff campground and on the train tracks. This is the perfect place to grab a cup if you’re staying at one of California’s most popular campgrounds. Bonus: shares square with legendary VG donuts. Coffee and donuts? Yes, please.
Meanwhile, their Leucadia location is right off the 101 and shares a building with Haggo Organic Tacos. Both stores have circumscribed indoor seating, but plenty of outdoor space for sipping, snacking and hanging. Bump sources coffee from farms dedicated to preserving land and aquatic ecosystems, and it shows in every cup. Their frigid brew in particular is a standout – glossy, bold and just what you want after a surf session.
Coffee coffee
On 101, several Beery Beery stores (Regal Seagull bar) and next door Bing Surfboards (Formerly the legendary surfy surfy shop), sits Coffee coffee. This is a real staple in Leucadia, perfectly planted in the city center. But Leucadia’s “downtown” isn’t polished or polished like most city centers. It’s low key, quirky and full of its own petite town charm that makes coffee go well with coffee. The store itself is beautifully designed with huge windows that flood the space with natural lightweight. There is plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors and along with the standard coffee lineup they have an extensive tea menu and lightweight breakfast and lunch bites.
One of its most iconic features is the massive retro mural on the side of the building: “Welcome to Leucadia!” – Perfect for a before or after photo of your caffeine fix.
Lofty Coffee Co.
Lofty Coffee Co. It helped launch the third wave coffee scene in Encinitas in 2011, starting with a petite shop on 101 just off the Encinitas Blvd exit from Highway 5 (the main gateway to the city). Expect the unexpected here, including recent experiments with Kyoto-style sluggish suspense. The Lofty is also an independent finger, with two seats directly opposite each other. If you’re on one, you’re literally looking at the other. The flagship store offers a cozy streetside atmosphere with plenty of outdoor seating. The resistance across the street is more intense, but has the same focus: carefully sourced organic baked beans. Plus, it’s high enough for beach and city views.
Signature drinks include the Aztec Mocha, made with obscure cocoa and cayenne pepper, and the Salted Caramel Latte with caramel and Fleur de Sel. And of course, don’t sleep on frigid brew, they’ve been perfecting it for over fourteen years and the difference shows in every sip.
