Coffee Project: Camber Coffee in Bellingham, Washington

It’s always nice to check in with us Camber Coffee of Bellingham, Washington, a brand featured extensively on Sprudge for the past decade. This time we take a closer look at the latest refresh of the Camber brand, just in time for the company’s 10th anniversary. We spoke to Camber’s Deavyn West to find out more.

What was the inspiration for this project?

When we embarked on a brand redesign to celebrate our 10th anniversary, our goal was to achieve an elegant, balanced and refined expression of Camber that would allow the complexities of our coffees to shine through.

The meaning of “Camber” is simply “curvature” (a reference to the roasting curve of coffee). We wanted to build on this inspiration while adding elements that pay homage to our original moon photos.

For this novel chapter, we wanted to create something grounded and timeless, yet fresh and contemporary – both a step forward and a nod to our roots.

Who designed it?

Bellingham graphic designer Cameron Jennings.

From the first vision to the final product, how long did the design process take?

Well over a year.

Tell us about some of the details of your favorite project.

The curved black shape on the front of the bag draws inspiration from the meaning of Camber, which means “curve” (a reference to the curve of roasting coffee). We wanted a bold, obscure shape that contrasts with the white bag, adds balance to the asymmetry of the label and logo, and serves as an anchor for the design as a whole.

The decoration on the back of the bag was our way of combining the original image of the Camber moon and the brand’s connection with nature. Using the Golden Ratio, the sign consists of overlapping circles that evoke the impression of moon phases or a lunar eclipse.

When creating the labels, we tried to include colors that would add balance, warmth and energy to the design, as well as showcase the diverse spectrum of blends and single-origin offerings in our ever-changing offering.

How does the packaging design reflect the company’s overall branding and message?

Camber’s ethos has always been elementary: sourcing exceptional coffees and roasting them in a way that brings out the unique characteristics of these coffees. By limiting the packaging to something elementary and sophisticated, we want the coffee to “speak for itself.”

Are there key packaging elements to educate the consumer?

Each blend label includes tasting notes, and each origin label provides additional information about the origin (location, variety, growing altitude and processing method).

Are any of the packaging materials recyclable or compostable?

Our 12 oz bags (Biotrē 2.0) are made from renewable, plant-based materials. The bags are not recyclable or compostable.
