James Hoffmann prepares another gigantic cup of senior coffee. World Barista Champion, author, popular YouTuber, co-founder of Square Mile Coffee and multiple Sprudgie Award winner is organizing another global coffee event with this year’s theme: fermentation. And it’s looking for coffee roasters from around the world who want to take part.
Building on the success of last year’s bubble that focused on decaffeination processes, which sold about 30,000 tasting kits worldwide, Hoffmann is taking a similar tack, but this time he’s exploring the effects of fermentation. Titled Fermentation ProjectHoffmann collaborates with Lucia Solis, a renowned green coffee and fermentation expert and member of the Sprudge Twenty 2021 cohort.
For the project, Solis took a single batch of coffee from Guatemala and divided it into four micro-batches, each undergoing a different fermentation process. As Hoffmann notes in the film, the purpose of the tasting is to better understand the basics of fermentation, so that the processes this coffee undergoes do not have the character of “weird and crazy” experiments or co-fermentation.
This year, four batches will be offered in half-packs, allowing even more coffee roasters to participate than last year. Exact pricing and details on the various fermentation processes have not yet been made public. Global live bubbles are tentatively scheduled for behind schedule June or early July.
But for now, Hoffmann is looking for roasters to join him. That’s why he asks interested coffee roasters from all over the world to do so sign up for the Fermentation Project newsletter to learn more about this year’s event. Signing up for the newsletter is not an obligation to participate, but only a consent to receive e-mails from Hoffmann with additional information. So if you want to take part in one of the largest coffee tastings in the history of the world, sign up for the newsletter to learn more.
