ED+U: Cafe Imports’ wide-ranging, free novel coffee academy

One of the thrilling but also terrifying parts about drinking coffee is that there is so much to learn. One minute you’re dazed by a cup of strawberry-flavored coffee, the next you’re immersed in facts about origins, fermentation, processing and diversity, roast curves and drop temperatures, extraction and turbulence, grinders and burrs, and about a million other things. And you just wanted to know why this coffee tasted so different.

But this is where the journey begins; where it goes is up to you. And this journey, wherever it takes you, is a little easier now, thanks Cafe import brand novel ED+U. The open access coffee academy covers a wide range of topics and is designed for apply by everyone from enthusiasts to coffee professionals and businesses. And it is completely free and anyone can apply it.

Created by Cafe Imports Chief Education Officer Dylan Siemens, a former US Brewers Cup champion and US Barista Championship finalist, ED+U is a six-part educational series covering many aspects of the coffee supply chain, from production to consumption. Course topics include: Coffee is a plant (biology, speciation and reproduction of coffee), Coffee is agriculture (environmental factors and cultivation), Coffee is a process (processing, fermentation, drying and grinding), Coffee is an industry (speciality, C-market and buying and selling), Coffee is a science (ecological grading, sample roasting and sensory analysis), and Coffee is an art (roaster, brewing and the science of flavor).

“Specialty coffee education is commercially available, but often for a fee or left to the employer to provide. For compact businesses such as those engaged in specialty coffee, creating a training program from scratch is time-consuming and high-priced,” reads the press release. “Owners and trainers are often forced to prioritize skills training, leaving a gap in the knowledge training they would like to provide. Novel coffee professionals looking to build a career and deepen their knowledge of the industry have few places to turn and may feel they have reached a knowledge plateau. ED+U exists to fill these gaps and raise ceilings.”
